Review of Todd Diamond's F*ck Street Magic DVD
By David Christopher
This is a must have DVD on many levels. We'll start with the actual effects. Todd's Spellbound routine is excellent. Yes, it's the classic effect, but Todd has added his touches. Learn his handling for variation, to refresh your handling, or to learn a spellbound effect cuz you don't know one. Todd's work on this effect makes for a solid routine that resets instantly, it's commercially friendly, and you can be ready to go at a moments notice. Well done.
The ungimmicked NFW. Sorry to say it, Gary, but I would do Todd's ungimmicked NFW over the marketed NFW any day. Unless you're THAT good, The NFW we've come to know and love has been confined to being a packet trick. And I didn't really care for having double-sided tape on cards, makes me feel a little tingly. Not the good tingly. With Todd's presentation which was originally shown to him in Houston, Texas, you don't do the whole jokers flipping over one at a time, but you are left in a much better position for combining it with other effects, and even moving on to another effect. It's as strong an effect as the original NFW, with the flexibility to return the cards to the deck or do another aces effect.
Which brings us to the third and final effect... Birds & Bees. oh boy. The first time watching this through made me a lil uncomfortable. Keep in mind I worked for Disney for six years, and I'm watching blue humor. Working for Disney, you're PC sensor becomes way sensative. But to each their own. Todd even states in the DVD that he doesn't expect you to use his patter. He uses patter that works for him. Every magician should use patter that works for their character and style. But what you should take away from the teachings is a structure, an understanding of presentation and entertainment, and spectator interaction. That being said... Todd's ambitious card routine is entertaining and well structured, the stand out feature being his patter.
The interview with James Dimmare is a must watch. I wish I could line up every magician and tape their eyes open and force them to take it in. Vital material if you want to do this. By "this", I mean magic as a profession. Too many valid points that really hit home. It's the perfect way to wrap up a magic DVD. Todd and James are to magicians that are dedicated to the craft and would not steer you wrong. Watch the interview and take copious notes. Well... you don't have to write it down as long as you take it to heart.
This is honestly a great DVD to have. Thank you to Todd for giving us the opportunity to spread the good word. And aside from these fantastic effects, there's a few other things I'm taking from this DVD. One is ye olde marker up the nose, thanks for the reminder, haven't done that in a while. the other is the "This is very important, NOT YOUR FACE." (spectator signing card). Of all the times you made me smile with this DVD, those two are personal keepers. Get your copy!
