Review of Paul Green's In The Trenches DVD
By David Christopher
To start, the imagery that Penguin Magic has produced for the cover of the dvd would suggest that this dvd is intended for the finger flippers and maybe the ellusionist crowd. This is not the case, however, the material in this DVD is valuable. The magic that Paul shares with us is material that has served him well over thousands of performances. The routines are creative and skillful, however, these appear to be routines that you would find an older magician performing in a pub or in the close up parlour at the magic castle. These routines have a "classic" feel; professor's nightmare, spongeballs, some nice coin work and card tricks.
What you should take from this DVD is the structure of the routines and the creativity Paul has infused into some standard magic. As far as patter... put some thought into Paul's presentation and find patter that works for you. Hopefully, you will discover patter that is more comical and exciting in nature... and a little less "TA DA".
Keep in mind, this is not a bad review. This is a good addition to a collection of magic DVDs that will serve in creating your performing style. Routining is extremely important when performing. The routines that stand out in this particular DVD are Jeopardy, Flying Eagles, 2 Copper Silver, Above, Beside or Below, and The Rope Routine.
As for the difficulty, know how to classic palm, double lift, and deliver entertaining patter. Previous experience with spongeballs and professor's nightmare will serve you well.Get your copy!
In The Trenches by Paul Green (2002)
Jeopardy
This is considered one of the best presentations of the triple prediction. This effect literally unfolds and announces a series of predictions that would make Alex Trebec's head spin.
Flying Eagles
A classic coin routine sprinkled with dynamic touches that make it a hard-hitting and striking piece of magical theater.
2 Copper Silver
An eye-popping routine with the ever popular coin set (also works with Copper, Silver, Brass). There are three distinct transpositions and it's easy to do. Feature's Paul's pouch switch that elegantly diitches the gaffs and leaves you clean as a whistle.
KB/PG Sponge balls
Inspired by Ken Brooke, this audience tested routine has everything from vanishes, transpositions and changes - all the way down to mini spongeballs!
Mission Impossible
One of Paul's most requested tricks as he becomes a spy and the secret documents (a signed playing card) appears in the most unusual place - a mini briefcase!
Above, Beside or Below
Coins across that really surprises your audience. Perfect for strolling venues as it's done in their hands!
Here, There, and Chicago Too
Combining the classic "Here. There, and Everywhere" plot with the "Chicago Opener", this routine willl fool your audience - hard! Not as tough as you think.
Four on the Floor
With the help of J.C. Wagner, your audience will scream as they go through the twists and turns of this card revelation.
Coming Together
Based on Peter Samuelson's 'New York Transpo.' this is Paul's take on bringing two spectators together. Two separate signatures end up on the same card.
The Rope Routine
Fabulous, great, unbelievable handling for the Professor's Nightmare. A super clean display sells the ropes being different lengths and instantly they turn into giant worms!! OOOhhh!
