Review of Mike Powers' Diminishing Returns
By David Christopher
The Effect:
Diminishing Returns is one of the most visual effects ever devised. A spectator names ANY CARD. This card is removed from the deck and tabled. Then impossibly, the ENTIRE DECK is found to have shrunk to MINI SIZE!
The normal sized card which was selected is put back in the middle of the mini sized deck, which is then re-spread.....only this time, the entire deck is back to normal size EXCEPT the spectator's selection, which is now a mini-card!!
As a kicker, the spectator then witnesses the mini-chosen card grow back to full size right before their eyes!
This is visual magic at its best. You get 52 factory made Bicycle cards and a professionally illustrated manuscript. You also get a second, highly visual trick for FREE (THE DEFECTIVE DECK comes free with Diminishing Returns).
I'm new to magic, can I do it?
YES. This is an excellent trick. Easy to execute. This may even be your introduction to magic. I recommend this trick for walk around in a restaurant; Especially if you have a shrinking card box. There is no sleight-of-hand; just practice a nice straight ribbon spread. Nothing you couldn't do if you practiced it a few times with a trusted friend.
Will I use it?
YES. This is a funny trick. Diminishing Returns will make people laugh and it's very visual. It can even be repeated with a different card every time!
The cards are gimmicked, but you can take care of that with a simple deck switch. This deck of cards is just as visual as a svengali deck. Or you can walk away with normal size cards and a box thats too small. It's funny!
Is it repeatable?
There's a saying,"Once is entertainment, twice is education." Of course you can repeat it. Repeating the effect for the same audience right after you perform it: not suggested (though you could probably get away with it). YES.
Worth the price?
YES. The Diminishing Returns deck is definitely worth it. And it comes with a handful of gaffed cards for The Defective Deck. It's $19.95. You'll have a lot of fun with this one.
Where can I get it?
