Vegan Cheese Goes On The Block
Most people don’t think of vegan cheese when it comes to a vegetarian diet. But the fact of the matter is, due to the way this dairy product processed, you may be exposing yourself to animal fats and proteins without knowing it. Now you don’t have to give up your favorite pizza, or try one without the mozzarella.
In the last few years, vegetarian cheeses have been improved upon, and now there is a wide selection of both vegan, vegetarian cheeses and vegan cream cheese available. Health food stores carry this product, as do some specialty grocery stores. Now vegan and vegetarian cheeses are starting to be offered at major chains as well as more and more people are exploring this healthy way of eating.
You may wonder what the difference between vegan and vegetarian cheeses are. The big difference lie in nutritional value and the ingredients. A vegetarian ‘dairy’ product may contain casein, which is an animal protein, butterfat, or in some case goat milk. A non dairy product is totally non-dairy, and is usually made from things like tofu, soy products, or in some cases with rice or potato starch.
Different brands vary in their ingredients, which means differences in nutritional value. Non dairy cheeses are typically lower in protein then the dairy variety. They are also lower in calories per serving than a dairy brand would be. There is usually less fat in a non dairy products as well.
If you wish to incorporate non dairy cheeses into your menu, be sure that you are prepared to get other sources of nutrition elsewhere. For example peanut butter is an excellent alternative protein source. Consult a health professional or nutritionist if you any questions.
Non dairy cheese can be a healthy alternative to dairy. With the expanding interest in the market, vegetarian products have improved steadily in regards to taste and quality. There are a wide variety of choices available. In taste tests consumers have a hard time telling the difference.
Vegan cheese has improved over time, and it’s hard to tell the difference. As always when making changes to your diet, it is wise to consult with your doctor, or a health professional. That being said, this can be a healthy choice for you. People with allergies to dairy products can now enjoy cheeses and pizza, and a whole host of other good things.
